Kondo
The Kondo (Main Hall) is located within the Danjo Garan complex on Mount
Koya in Wakayama Prefecture.
As the principal hall for the entire Mount
Koya monastic complex, it was originally built in 819 and known as the *Kodo*
(Lecture Hall); at various times, it was also referred to as the *Gogando* (
Hall for worship) or *Yakushido* (Hall of the Medicine Buddha).
Having suffered repeated fires, the current
structure—built in 1932 using reinforced concrete—represents the seventh
reconstruction.
It features an *irimoya* (hip-and-gable)
roof and measures 23.80 meters in depth, 30.00 meters in width, and 23.73
meters in height.
Major annual religious ceremonies at Mount
Koya are held here.
The principal image enshrined within is a
statue of Yakushi Nyorai (the Medicine Buddha)—specifically identified as
Akshobhya Nyorai—created by the sculptor Takamura Kōun; this is a *hibutsu*
(secret Buddha image not normally shown to the public). The interior wall
paintings are the work of the artist Kimura Buzan.
Fudan-gyo
One week, starting August 7 at 9:00AM, Garan Kondo
Since Kanji 8 (1094), for the sake of
Metsusai Shozen, for one week, the inside of Kondo is covered with vertically
written scriptures are hung on the wall. Because they are very different
chants, those interested in chants find them interesting.
At this mass, Bishop Shinzan is honored, and under the Kongo Mandala, the
scrolls of Bishop Shinzan and Shakyamuni are hung.
The last scripture of the day, is ended in the middle (owarikyo), and is the
first script of the next day (Hajimekyo), and thus the weeklong mass continues.
